The study found that certain genes increase a person’s risk of depression while increasing exercise levels essentially overrides that genetic risk.
According to a new study, regular exercise can reduce the risk of depression, even in people genetically prone to the condition.
“Our findings strongly suggest that, when it comes to depression, genes are not the destination and that being physically active has the potential to neutralize the additional risk of future episodes in individuals who are genetically vulnerable,” said lead study author Karmel. Choi, a postdoctoral researcher in psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital, said in a statement.
According to the study, for every four hours of exercise per week, participants saw a 17 percent reduction in their chances of experiencing bouts of depression over the next two years.

The study was published Tuesday in the journal Depression and Anxiety.
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), depression can occur in families, suggesting that genetic factors contribute to the risk of developing the disease.
In the new study, researchers analyzed information from almost 8,000 participants in the Biobank Partners HealthCare, a database to help researchers better understand how people’s genes, environment, and lifestyle affect their health.
- Participants provided a blood sample, their genomes were analyzed and completed a survey on their lifestyle behaviors, such as the amount of exercise they usually do in a week.
- The information received was then linked to the electronic health records (EHR) of people within Partners HealthCare, a Boston-based health care system.
- The study was conducted in people who were not currently depressed, so researchers excluded people who had visited a medical professional for depression in the past year.
Researchers who use the genome date calculate a person’s genetic risk for depression and give people a “score” based on their risk. They found that those with a high risk of depression were 50 percent more likely to experience a new episode of depression in the next two years, compared to those with low genetic risk.
It was discovered that people who were physically active were less likely to experience a new episode of depression.
In addition, both high-intensity exercises, such as running, and low-intensity exercises, such as yoga, were associated with a lower risk of depression.
However, the study did not show that lack of exercise causes depression.
